The following link takes you to the PDF file that discusses the hymn. This is a quick read, and can be very helpful for second language speakers.
Hymn – 035 For the Strength of the Hills
This hymn commentary is a help prepared for those who might find it interesting to read an explanation of the text of some of our beloved hymns. The text for this hymn came from lds.org. Specifically, it came from this list of hymns.
How many hymns finally end up in this series will depend on whether this is something you find useful. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think.
I like your commentary about this hymn, but it is only half the story. Search for “Hymn of the Vaudois Mountaineers in Times of Persecution.” In the mid-1800’s 72 of these incredible people joined the Church in their mountain sanctuary in Italy. They left the strength of their hills, to seek refuge once again in the mountains, this time in the Rockies.
Thank you! Great info.
I am with Steve on this one. Those ancestors in Italy were my husbands so these stories are in their genealogy.
Thank You So Much. Very inspired, and Inspiring. I Love helping children understand our Hymns and I look for ways to pique their interest and desire to understand and feel the spirit when they listen to and sing our Hymns. I truly am Thankful to have found Your website, and look forward to learning more about other Hymns. How can I access a list of you commentaries ?
Marilyn
Marilyn, I don’t currently have a collection of the commentaries on the hymns. I have posted (I think) roughly the first 85 hymns. I stopped writing them last year due to lack of interest on the part of my readership. Personally, I think they make a great way for second language speakers to become more familiar with the hymns and what they mean in English. And many of the older hymns can be difficult for the native English speakers to understand because of their use of the language of poetry.
As to other commentaries, most of them are listed in the Mormon Basics Store on the website. You might enjoy getting a copy of my latest book A Little Book of Ministering. It is the first book published on ministering for the members of the Church. Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing this.
With all due respect, this song is not about the Mormons. It is a poem about the Waldensians.
